    When I was a kid sometimes we went to play to the railway-cemetery ( if the guard coudn't catch us :D ) - like an open-air museum. I got some documentation off the floors of the half cut up locomotives. One of them was a conversion table between coal and mazut - so obviously they were using that as well. Mazut defined as heavy oil in wiki, but this thing was solid enough - if disgusting - to be shovelable ( suppose it was a nightmare stuff to handle a bit sticky similar to tar ).

    Talking about locomotives if you haven't seen Kray(2010) yet then you want to.
